Cook Island Language week - Singing
Kia Orana and welcome back to a new blog!
This week is a special week, because we celebrate the Cook Islands.
If you don't know what Cook Island is or why we celebrate the Cook Islands?, keep reading to find out more.
Cook Island is a nation in the south pacific ocean, with links to New Zealand Maori. Cook Island and Maori have similar languages and pronunciation, but with both languages have twist to them.
Example : Maori language - Pehea Koe? (How are you?). Cook Island language - Pe'ea koe?(How are you?).
We have Cook Island language week to give New Zealand a chance in learning and celebrating about the rich language and culture of the Cook Island people.
Also, tomorrow my school will be having a Cook Island celebration where every class shares what they've learned about the Cook Islands and items they might perform. E.G - Traditional Cook Island dance, Song.
We have also been learning to have basic conversations in Cook Island Maori.
Here is an example of my buddies and I.
________
Basic conversation:
Suave : Kia Orana
Constance : Kia Orana
Suave: Pe'ea Koe?
Constance : Meitaki Au
Constance : Akape'ea koe?
Suave : Meitaki Au
_
This was a basic conversation. And now, we will be teaching you the key words in our conversation.
Kia Orana - Hello
Pe'ea - How are you?
Meitaki - Good/Thank you/Fine
Akape'ea - How about you
.
Fun Fact:
Did you know Cook Island is made up of 15 islands?
The Cook Island flag became an official flag in 1979.
This is the end of my blog and I hope you've enjoyed!
Thank you!
